Interested in connecting maths and science to real-world engineering? Discover practical, hands-on learning opportunities at the Engineering in Action professional development day at UQ!

This professional development experience is designed for maths, science, engineering and physics teachers who want to build their confidence in linking classroom concepts to engineering applications. Through live demonstrations, engaging activities in UQ Innovate’s makerspace, and practical classroom resources, you’ll discover how to make STEM subjects exciting, relevant, and accessible for your students, while gaining effective strategies to translate these fundamentals into engaging, practical teaching.

What you will receive: You will receive a certificate of participation, access to all tools, websites and software used during the PD for teachers and students in the Education QLD Environment, a copy of teaching resources and ongoing educational support beyond the PD

Learning Objectives

  • Strengthen understanding of engineering fundamentals linked to maths curriculum
  • Learn how to connect abstract concepts to real-world problem-solving
  • Gain confidence teaching engineering applications in the classroom
  • Discover engaging, hands-on activities for students

Schedule

8:45 am: Welcome

We will meet at the University of Queensland in Collaborative Room (49-301) at the Advanced Engineering Building.

9:00 am: Presentation

  • Engineering Foundations - Discover how core maths and science concepts directly connect to real-world engineering applications in this practical workshop. Teachers will explore how these subjects integrate with their curriculum, gain a clear overview of key engineering principles relevant to secondary maths, science, and physics, and learn effective strategies to translate these fundamentals into engaging, accessible classroom teaching.

10:00 am: Morning Tea

Enjoy morning tea in the atrium of the Advanced Engineering Building.

10:30 am: Tour

  • Explore UQ Innovate’s state-of-the-art facilities and see the tools and technologies used to bring engineering projects to life.

11:30 am: Showcase

  • Explore hands-on demonstrations and classroom kits designed to make teaching physics, maths, and engineering more interactive and curriculum-aligned.

12:15 pm: Lunch

Enjoy a delicious lunch in the atrium of the Advanced Engineering Building.

1:00 pm: Engineering Challenge

  • From Theory to Practice - Take part in a practical engineering challenge in the UQ Innovate makerspace. Build and test a miniature project, simulating how real-world engineering design works. Learn how to adapt these activities for your own classrooms to boost student engagement and real-world problem-solving skills.
