Making Maths Matter
Interested in transforming the way you teach maths? Join us for Making Maths Matter, a one-day Professional Development event designed for teachers to strengthen their knowledge, boost student engagement, and bring maths to life in the classroom.

Explore hands-on workshops that focus on building strong conceptual foundations, simplifying complex ideas, and making maths relevant and meaningful for every student. Learn practical strategies and take away actionable tools to help students build confidence, develop real-world problem-solving skills, and see the value of maths beyond the textbook.
What you will receive: You will receive a certificate of participation, access to all tools, websites and software used during the PD, a copy of teaching resources and ongoing educational support beyond the PD
Learning Objectives
- Connect mathematical concepts to real-world contexts
- Use technology and apps to enhance learning
- Build teacher confidence in applying statistics, networks, and graph theory
- Explore strategies to make maths engaging and relevant
Schedule
8:45 am: Welcome
We will meet at the University of Queensland in Theatre (03-206) at the Global Change Institute.
9:00 am: Interactive Presentation
- Making Maths Meaningful - Participants will define key problem statements, reflect on current practice, and engage with pedagogical strategies that connect abstract mathematical concepts to relatable, real-world contexts. The session focuses on practical approaches to boost student confidence, understanding, and engagement.
10:00 am: Hands-on Workshops
- Exploring Bivariate Data - A hands-on workshop exploring the importance of statistical concepts in understanding relationships between quantities and how to engage students in collecting and analysing their own data.
11:00 am: Morning Tea
Enjoy morning tea in the Atrium.
11:30 am: Hands-on Workshops
- Networks and Graph Theory - Explore how graphs and networks can be used to model real-life situations that involves a set of objects and the connections between them — from journey planning on public transport to modelling the spread of viruses or ensuring reliable communication systems. This hands-on session will support student learning through visual tools and applied classroom activities, giving teachers practical ways to bring network and graph concepts to life.
12:30 pm: Hands-on Workshops
- Understanding Statistical Inference - Engage in teaching activities to help students understand discrete random variables and apply them to create confidence intervals from data.
1:30 pm: Lunch
Enjoy a delicious lunch in the Atrium.
2:00 pm: Ideas Lab
- Teaching with Technology: Apps and Innovation in the Maths Classroom - Discover how technology can transform the way maths is taught and learned. This interactive session explores using apps to support conceptual understanding, providing teachers with take-home tools that encourage curiosity, engagement, and critical thinking.
