Fostering positive early experiences with mathematics is a growing priority in Australian early childhood education. Research shows that when children are introduced to maths in engaging, everyday ways during their preschool years, they’re more likely to develop confidence and enjoyment in the subject — setting the stage for long-term academic success.
To support this, Let’s Count is a free, online professional development program designed for early years educators. Delivered by The Smith Family and funded by the Australian Government, the program empowers educators to partner with families in developing young children’s mathematical skills through everyday interactions.
Aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), Let’s Count includes three self-paced modules, a 4 to 6-week practical application phase, and a two-hour facilitated online forum. The program explores more than just counting — it covers patterns, shapes, measurements, and spatial awareness, encouraging educators to incorporate maths into play-based learning.
By nurturing mathematical thinking from an early age, children begin to build problem-solving and reasoning skills that extend far beyond the classroom. For early childhood professionals looking to expand their skills and support young learners, Let’s Count offers an accessible and impactful starting point.
