UQ and UniSQ collaborate with The Glennie School to inspire future scientists

A new initiative between The Glennie School, the University of Queensland (UQ), and the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) is offering Year 10 students a unique opportunity to explore careers in science and technology.

Launched in early May, the program pairs students with research mentors from both universities to design and conduct six scientific experiments, with findings to be presented at the end of the year. The project aims to deepen students' understanding of the scientific process while developing critical communication and problem-solving skills.

UniSQ science education lecturer Dr. Louisa Puslednik highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that it encourages regional and rural students to envision themselves as future scientists. "The students asked questions about what it’s like to be a scientist, what that journey looks like, and the essential skills you develop," she said.

Experiment topics range from the effects of music on emotional wellbeing to its influence on concentration and everyday behaviour. The program is the first of its kind in Queensland, following successful trials in New South Wales.

Dr. Puslednik emphasized that the experience goes beyond science, aiming to equip students with vital career skills. "We hope that this increases not just their science skills, but also their communication and problem-solving abilities — skills that are crucial for any career," she added.
